525 Artist/Designer of the Week

Cape Town born artist, Lorraine Loots, who first came to our attention for her miniture paintings and first project, 365 Paintings for Ants. And trust me, they really are paintings for ants.

365 Paintings for Ants, which she started on 1 January 2013, involved Lorraine creating a miniature painting every single day for the entire year. she posted a painting every day on Tumblr and Instagram (where you can browse all 365 paintings in the archive).

most of the time the subject stemmed from her own imagination, but as it gained momentum people booked dates that were special to them and commissioned paintings, like this portrait of Ron Swanson painted for a couple who got engaged after an episode of Parks and Recreation.

After such success from the first project, the next phase for Lorraine was 365 Postcards for Ants which she decied to base her atowork on her home town, in honour of it being the 2014 World Design Capital.

However, Her most recent endeavor for 2015 which she has now embarked is called Potlock 100, a collection of 100 miniatures are to be painted throughout 2015. These will be painted over 25 weeks, on themed days, namely: Microcosm Mondays, Tiny Tuesdays, Fursdays and Free Fridays.

The weeks will be announced randomly as the year goes along, the dates of the paintings thus becoming the "potluck" element. All 100 original paintings will be auctioned on Instagram, framed in raw wood and exhibited, before being sent to their owners in February 2016.
